Filthy Friends New Album Emerald Valley Coming May 3, 2019

February 22, 2019

Kill Rock Stars is proud to announce the second full length album from Filthy Friends Emerald Valley. The album drops May 3, 2019. CLICK HERE TO PRE-ORDER YOUR COPY

The first releases from Filthy Friends, the scorchingly melodic rock group whose membership consists of some of the most original musical voices of the past three decades, came as a small, delightful shock to the system. Not only because of the names associated with the project, including Sleater-Kinney co-founder Corin Tucker, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and indie stalwarts Scott McCaughey and Kurt Bloch, but also because of how ably they were able to mesh their individual sounds into a crackling melodic whole on debut album Invitation.

Now, with their follow-up— Emerald Valley ,the Friends have proven their collective mettle, crafting a thematic suite of songs that finds the quintet digging deeper into their bag of musical tricks and giving Tucker room to rage about and mourn the fate of our planet and the people who inhabit it. The core idea came from a demo Buck shared with Tucker for a grinding blues song that eventually turned into this new album’s title track. The minute she heard it, Tucker says, it sparked something within her: “I had this long poem growing in my brain,” she says. “It turned into a sort of manifesto about the kind of place we are at as a country but also as a region. Just taking stock of where we’re at and feeling like I can’t believe we let things get this bad.” While Emerald Valley s tarts off with idyllic imagery (“Rolling fields, they speak your name/vibrant green is here again”), the album and its title track slowly reveal the ugly underneath, with human arrogance and hubris hurting the Earth and the people who take on “backbreaking work for little pay.”

From there, the Friends address growing concerns over oil production and distribution (“Pipeline”), gentrification and income inequality within the band’s hometown of Portland, Oregon (“One Flew East”), and taking on the voice of the desperate souls that are getting crushed under the wheels of capitalism (“Last Chance County”). The band paints these themes with many different shades of the rock palette, nestling a snapping punk tune between a bit of jangly pop and an almost-shoegaze ballad, with stops along the way for songs that burn as hot and move as slow as lava and tunes that stay steady and fast as a rocket launch. Emerald Valley is also a testament the indefatigable spirit of the Filthy Friends themselves. Scott McCaughey bounced back from a stroke he suffered in late 2017, which curtailed the band’s tour plans and is playing with more fire than ever. As well, Corin Tucker and Peter Buck were able to devise some amazing work even as their creative energies were being pulled toward other projects like Arthur Buck and Sleater-Kinney. Too, the band was able to bring a new member into the fold with drummer Linda Pitmon coming on board to replace Bill Rieflin without losing an ounce of their power.

We could all take a lesson from Filthy Friends. As proven by Emerald Valley, when a group of like-minded people gather their individual strengths together and point them toward a singular goal, there’s no telling how powerful they can become and what an impact they can make on the world at large.

KINSKI'S NEW ALBUM 'ACCUSTOMED TO YOUR FACE' OUT NOW

October 18, 2018

As they near their 20th year as a band, Kinski shows no signs of slowing down. They continue to push forward, seeking out new ways to blow your mind. Their new record, Accustomed to Your Face, sounds as free and daring as their early forays, but with the luster of confidence that comes with two decades of playing together.

Having played arenas and festivals across North America and Europe, Kinski is equally at home in a local club where they can test out new material, looking to find that choice spot between pure sound exploration and off the hook riffage. One never knows what to expect when seeing Kinski live (there may be some flute, a bass played with a bow), but no matter where the music ventures it will always come back round to expertly crafted rhythmically solid rock.

Accustomed to Your Face reflects that multi-faceted approach. In the tracks "Guest Girl Vocalist" and "There Goes Hot Stamper", Kinski seems to have harnessed the power of early punk and wed it to their own tight and head-on approach to the genre. But then there is "Kinski 101," a celebratory nod to their quintessential style of dynamically structured instrumental pieces. Weaving it all together is Kinski's consistent command of their craft. The rhythm section is dialed in and the interplay between the guitars continues to be more than the sum of their parts.

With deep roots in krautrock and South American rock of the 60's and 70's, Kinski has always been a proponent of like-minded groups from around the world, and have brought many bands to the U.S. including Acid Mothers Temple (Japan) and Träd, Gräs Och Stenar (Sweden). Similarly, their collaborations with artists such as the dance duo robbinschilds and installation artist Jim Hobbs have been fruitful, allowing them to further delve into regions of sound, working from different perspectives while connecting with new audiences that may have otherwise remained unaware of their work.

Over the years, critics have tried to pin Kinski down to certain genres (the Psych-Rock-Post-Rock-Metal patchwork flag has been planted) but Kinski defy easy categorization, fluctuating between fast, driving rawk, and sweet, lilting melodies…they will melt your brain with their supersonic shredding, but they will give you a hug before you go home.

WIMPS COVET OTHER PEOPLE'S PIZZA IN NEW MUSIC VIDEO

October 03, 2018

Feeling naughty? Wimps drummer David Ramm can relate. In the Marcy Stone-Francois directed video for "O.P.P.," he struggles with the urge to covet another's pizza... but only if it's cheese! Click here to watch the video at Brooklyn Vegan!

"O.P.P." appears on Wimps' new album Garbage People, which was recently named one of the Best Albums of Sumer 2018 by Bandcamp.

After six years spent building a reputation as one of the world's greatest “plenty of nonsense” guitar/bass/drum group, Garbage People finds the trio of Rachel Ratner, Matt Nyce, and David Ramm taking leaps forward sonically (there’s saxophone, keyboard, and juuuust enough cowbell) and lyrically (subject matter ranges from gender pay inequality, decline of bee populations, insomnia, and wanting to steal a pizza... but only if it’s cheese)! On Garbage People, Wimps have successfully filtered the best parts of 70’s Rough Trade, the International Pop Underground 7” series, Devo, The B-52s, and The Breeders into a unique and timeless sound that appeals to playlist streaming teens AND adults who own over 500 records.

COMEDY DUO FRANGELA ANNOUNCE DEBUT COMEDY ALBUM RESIST! OUT OCTOBER 19

September 10, 2018

Comedy duo Frangela announce the release of their debut comedy album RESIST! out October 19 on Kill Rock Stars. Recorded in front of an appropriately raucous audience, Frangela offer up a fast-paced, wickedly funny spin through our present-day agonies, from politics to toga parties, Frances Callier and Angela V. Shelton are fired up and they want you to be too! RESIST! is an album that’s pointed and hilarious in equal measure.

Frangela is everything that political comedy should be in 2018: two women speaking truth to power, stoking the flames of resistance, bringing together likeminded people for a common cause, wondering why in the hell green bean casserole is a thing…RESIST! is also the kind of inspiring document that will help rational people keep fighting the good fight against bad policies and worse policymakers.

Frances and Angela originally joined forces on the stage of the Second City Theatre in Chicago, finding a kindred spirit and the kind of irrefutable chemistry that only the best of friends can create. Since then, the duo has been a regular fixture on television and radio, popping up to offer their witty and scathing commentary about the pop culture and political stories of the day. They’ve worked separately too, to great acclaim, but it is when Frances and Angela get together that the sparks really start flying. Currently, Frangela can be seen in the new TV show "Me Time with Frangela" and performing live on Stephanie Miller’s Sexy Liberal Tour. They also have a weekly podcast called “The Final Word” and are regulars on Stephanie Miller's Sexy Liberal radio show.
