KINSKI PREMIERE NEW SONG "BULLETIN OF THE INTERNATIONAL STRING FIGURE ASSOCIATION"
May 26, 2015Kinski are thrilled to share the second single from their upcoming album 7 (or 8), their latest LP due out on Kill Rock Stars this June 2nd. Where first single “Flight Risk” was a blistering homage to 1969 Detroit, “Bulletin…” marries the riff-centric mentality of latter-era Kinski with the more spacious compositions they’re known for, resulting in 12 minutes of guitar and string-crescendo perfection, and serving as one of the highlights of 7 (or 8). The band has also recently announced a string of Northwest tour dates (see below) and will be hitting the rest of the nation and Europe later this summer. Stay tuned for more!
For a band whose extensive discography has historically been primarily instrumental and prone to modifying adjectives like “post-“ and “space-“, the last couple of years have been a left turn down a twisted alley of fuzz pedals, blown tube amps, and a kind of raw power befitting of the Stooges. 7 (or 8) finds Kinski sounding heavier, faster, and even more self-assured, picking up where Cosy Moments left off but also pushing their sound into even more singular territory. 7 (or 8), the title itself a wry observation echoing the confusion created by their extensive catalog, is in fact their SEVENTH (or eighth depending who you ask) LP and second for new label home Kill Rock Stars, having previously released several LPs on Sub Pop and other discerning independent labels. Recorded and mixed in San Francisco at El Studio with Phil Manley (of Trans Am), 7 (or 8) comes in the midst of a more prolific period for the band. “It always takes us awhile to write a record but this one came quickly. We’ve stopped worrying about it so much and just get on with it, which is easier on the soul,” says guitarist/singer Chris Martin. This mindset, alongside their newfound lyricism, has revealed a band that is slyly self-aware, hinted at through years of tongue-in-cheek song titles but now fully evident. The quicker pace has also instilled a palpable confidence and energy on record. That being said,7 (or 8) hits like a ton of bricks. The double helping of riffs in the form of “Detroit Trickle Down” and “Flight Risk” leave the listener nearly out of breath. Martin, Lucy Atkinson (Bass), Matthew Reid-Schwartz (Guitar), and Barrett Wilke (Drums) stretch out a bit over the course of the record, marrying their more expansive sound with proto-punk fury, but they rarely let up until the last song, album highlight “Bulletin of the International String Figure Association”. One of the last songs written for the record, “Bulletin…” eases into a nearly 12 minute crescendo of rock bliss, gently flirts with a string section at the same time, and then floats back down to Earth in a perfect denouement. Like John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands on the cover, Kinski strive to make art that is uncompromising and on their own terms and 7 (or 8) is a refreshing reminder that rock music in 2015 can still be a unique and cathartic experience.

NEW DOG JOIN THE KRS ROSTER
March 23, 2015We are excited to welcome Anar Badalov's solo project New Dog to the Kill Rock Stars roster. New Dog's album Classic Ballroom Dances will be released on June 2nd, 2015 on LP and digitally and is available for pre-order now.
Listen to the song "The Airport Lobby"
Anar Badalov is New Dog, but Classic Ballroom Dances is no trick; this intimate and enthralling album is the next installment in the career of this promising young songwriter. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan in the 80s, Anar’s family immigrated to Baltimore, MD during the breakup of the Soviet Union. Anar grew up in Baltimore and was in two notable bands, Metal Hearts and Travels, between 2004 and 2014.
With the dissolution of Travels, Anar began working on his own for the first time. Classic Ballroom Dances, like the first New Dog album Lost Weekend, was recorded alone in his apartment. Anar describes the process: “Not having someone to lean on, musically, is both terrifying and doubly rewarding. You work at your own pace, and set your own rules.”
The title was inspired by the poem of the same name by Yugoslavian poet Charles Simic. Simic has said that list poems like Classic Ballroom Dances are “the poetic equivalent of quilt-making.” Long before Anar read this poem or heard of the poet, this was the way he approached songwriting. “I’d like to think that at least a handful of songs on this album capture something like what Simic is talking about,” he says. Simic is one of Anar’s biggest influences. Others include Lee Hazlewood, Frank O'Hara, Mark Linkous, John Berryman, Raymond Carver, Anton Chekhov, Townes Van Zandt and guitarist Mick Turner.
INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT KRS HQ
February 24, 2015
Do you daydream about peeking behind the digital curtain to investigate the inner workings of a small/medium sized independent record label? If so, that is good news, because Kill Rock Stars is looking for an intern during the Spring 2015 academic quarter/term. Interns generally help out around 5-10 hours a week and tasks include assisting with mailings, radio promotion, social media, data entry, flyering, archiving, and more!
To apply, e-mail krs at killrockstars dot com with your resume/c.v. and answer the following questions:
1. What are your favorite bands on Kill Rock Stars? (Don't say "all of them.").
2. What are the last few albums you bought?
3. What are the last shows that you went to?
4. What are you interested in learning about at KRS?
5. How do you anticipate applying knowledge gleaned at KRS to your future goals?
Since this is an unpaid internship, we REQUIRE that our interns are able to receive academic credit AND that they already live in the Portland, OR area.

Kill Rock Stars is excited to announce that we have signed comedian W. Kamau Bell. He will be recording two of his "Oh, Everything!" Comedy Tour shows at Seattle, Washington's Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute on Saturday, January 24th. Tickets are on sale now.
Socio-political comedian W. Kamau Bell may be most recognizable for his critically acclaimed FX/FXX TV show Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell, nominated for "Best Talk Series" at the 2012 NAACP Image Awards. Kamau was creator, writer and host of the comedy series, which was executive produced by Chris Rock who became a fan of Kamau's after seeing his one man show.
He also recently launched a brand new podcast Denzel Washington Is The Greatest Actor Of All Time Period. Each week, Kamau and Kevin Avery (Last Week Tonight With John Oliver) examine their shared belief that Denzel Washington is the greatest actor of all time, period. Available free at Wolfpop.com and downloadable from iTunes.
Kamau has also appeared on NPR's Fresh Air, Comedy Central, Conan, WTF with Marc Maron, MSNBC, The View, Real Time with Bill Maher, Yahoo News with Katie Couric and many, many more.
Kamau's Oh, Everything! Comedy Tour promises to be a comedic attack on everything he can't stop thinking about, including but not limited to homophobia, the 'N" word, gentrification, his mixed race kids, your "friends", your "followers", why he could never be an atheist, why his God looks like Denzel Washington with dreadlocks, guns and more.
Kamau had this to say about the upcoming taping: “I have loved Seattle audiences since the first time I performed there with their favorite adopted son Hari Kondabolu. They are tuned in, read up, turned on, frustrated, and ready to roll up their sleeves and get into it. I have been saving Seattle for a special occasion and recording a stand-up comedy CD with the legendary punk label Kill Rock Stars is it! I’m extremely proud to be on a label that has been home to revolutionary bands Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney, a label that made lefty politics cool before anyone thought that was possible, and a label that is home to brilliant comic voices like Kurt Braunohler, Ian Karmel, Cameron Esposito and my great friend Hari Kondabolu. LET’S DO THIS!”

"one of comedy's most necessary voices on social and political issues"
- NEW YORK TIMES
"The personable, quick comic skewers racism, stereotypes and an assortment of iconic taboos with provocative wit!"
- SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
"Bell's gimmick is intersectional progressivism: he treats racial, gay, and women's issues as inseparable. That may not sound hilarious, but when it works it grants him new routes into old topics."
- THE NEW YORKER
"In an era of hopelessly polarized social-media bickering, only the sharpest voices can cut through the noise and command the conversation - the Jon Stewarts, Chris Rocks and Stephen Colberts. Rising on that list is W. Kamau Bell"
