WIN A RELEASE DATE DATE WITH MARNIE STERN!
January 23, 2013
Hipster guys, are you tired of seeing Marnie Stern have relationships with an endless array of losers and bores? Don’t you think a guitarist as great as Marnie should have someone special to watch Law and Order SVU with? Do you enjoy petting dogs while eating chicken wings? And honestly, don’t you think a nice, positively cute, 30-something Jewish girl should meet the man of her dreams? We sure do!
If you live in the New York City area (no long-distance beaus please) and are not a total creep/stalker (we will KNOW if you are), please send an email with your answers to the application questions below, your favorite Marnie song, and a recent photo of yourself. We will pay for this date, but you’re paying for the next one!
Age, religion, and race are not a factor, but a sense of humor is critical. Marnie’s ideal man is a homebody who doesn’t mind that his girlfriend is out of town on tour a lot, and is not a drug addict, a slacker, or a vegan.
One more thing: Marnie doesn’t get to pick the winner, Marnie’s record label and publicist do, so go ahead and charm the metaphorical pants off us. We just want the best for her… and maybe you are it!!
Please email all applications to firstname.lastname@example.org
Are you gainfully employed? Elaborate.
When/ how long was your last relationship?
What are your hobbies/interests?
What qualities do you most enjoy in a woman?
List any anti-depressants you currently take:
What do you know about Marnie and why do you want to date her?
What would your most recent ex-girlfriend say about you? Can we get her email?
Where would you take Marnie on a first date and why?
KINSKI ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM "COSY MOMENTS."
January 17, 2013
Kill Rock Stars are pleased to announce Cosy Moments, the first Kinski album since 2007’s Down Below It’s Chaos, and premiere the first single “Conflict Free Diamonds” via MTV Hive. You can listen to the track here or download it from Bandcamp here.
Due out on April 2nd, Cosy Moments is filled with the glistening, graceful chords and heavy proto-punk rhythms that have become Kinski’s hallmarks over the last 14 years of playing music together. Not that the band is walking in their own musical footprints on the new album. Instead, Cosy Moments is the result of Chris Martin, the band’s songwriter, spending the last few years figuring out where to go next musically. “We wanted to make something poppier and more direct,” Martin said. “That was the kind of music I wanted to hear then and that's what we tried to do. I was really sick of hearing people step on wah wah pedals and solo over psych rock. There were so many people doing that. Including us. We've always had more poppy, song-ish elements but we just took it further this time.”
The addition of a pop element is not the only evolution of the band’s sound. This album also features vocals, which is a dramatic shift for a band that is known primarily as an instrumental group. “We always had songs with vocals on past albums, but it took me a long time to remember how to sing again,” Martin said. “I wrote a bunch of vocal songs. We even toured with Acid Mothers Temple with some of that stuff, but we ended up throwing most all of it out. And I just kept writing.” Heading back into the studio with producer Randall Dunn, who also recorded their last three records, Cosy Moments, the group’s sixth full length, is filled with Kinski’s dense, intricate and occasionally nearly deafening noise, a musical style that is almost completely contradictory to their album title.
Cosy Moments is available for pre-order on cd, lp (first 100 copies come on amber colored marbled vinyl!), and digitally.
BOATS ANNOUNCE CANADIAN TOUR + NEW SINGLE!
January 16, 2013Winnipeg indie pop outfit Boats makes impossibly hooky pop songs about death, being old, girls, glowing bears and escaping the spectral plane of existence and reappearing at a football game — all of which can be found on the band’s sparkling third album, A Fairway Full Of Miners, due out Feb. 5, 2013 via Kill Rock Stars (Corin Tucker Band, Elliott Smith, Decemberists, Deerhoof).
Recorded in the spring/summer of 2012 by Ryan McVeigh at Prairie Recording Studios/UMFM and mixed by David Carswell in Vancouver (Destroyer, New Pornographers), A Fairway Full Of Miners comes as the follow-up to Boats’ acclaimed 2010 sophomore album, Cannonballs, Cannonballs — named the No. 1 album of 2010 by Winnipeg college radio station 101.5 UMFM and hailed by critics for its inventiveness and mega-watt charm. But if Cannonballs, Cannonballs was all about giddy exuberance, A Fairway Full Of Miners is about growing up and finding yourself bored. There are still plenty of manic, sloppy-on-purpose junk-store pop tunes that burst with pop-rocks-and-Coke energy (O Telescope), but the new record also sees the band stretch out over more ambitious epics (Animated GIFs) and heartfelt ballads (Advice on Bears). It’s eclectic, but not unfocused; the whole thing is unified by frontman/band leader Mat Klachefsky’s helium-high yelp of a singing voice.
Maturity has become almost a cliché when it comes to describing albums — especially third albums — but A Fairway Full Of Miners has a focus to it that comes with relentless touring (Boats has done eight North American tours) and a sophistication that comes with refining a particular sound over the span of three albums). But don’t confuse mature with boring; Boats albums give you that thrilling feeling of being on the verge of spinning wildly, dizzingly out of control.
