Hari Kondabolu signs to Kill Rock Stars!

July 18, 2013

Kill Rock Stars is proud to announce that they have signed comedian Hari Kondabolu and will be releasing his first full-length comedy album in early 2014. NPR calls Kondabolu “a brainy comedian who cuts through the polite talk around race and gender,” and as such he is a perfect fit with KRS. Much of the music put out in the last 22 years on the label has been made by women, and much of it has a progressive political slant. Hari Kondabolu is a Brooklyn-based, Queens-raised comic who has been described by Timeout NY as “smart, analytical, and rising.” He has performed on CONAN, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham and John Oliver’s New York Standup Show. His Comedy Central Presents half-hour television special debuted on the network in February 2011. Hari is currently a writer and recurring on-camera contributor for FX’s Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell. He made his UK television debut on BBC 3’s Russell Howard’s Good News in April 2011, which preceded a month-long run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He then had a regular segment on the first series of BBC3′s “Live at the Electric” starring Russell Kane. He has also appeared on popular podcasts like WTF with Marc Maron and You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes.

When in New York City, he co-hosts the mostly improvised, monthly talk show The Untitled Kondabolu Brothers Project with his younger brother Ashok (“Dap” from hip hop group Das Racist). He also wrote the cover story for Spin Magazine about Das Racist in 2011. Hari is also a former video blogger for WORLD COMPASS, a joint initiative between WGBH Boston, PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

NPR's Morning Edition posted a great article on Kondabolu earlier today. You can read it here http://www.npr.org/blogs/codeswitch/2013/07/18/203034882/comedian-hari-kondabolu-on-diversity-race-and-burger-king

Kurt Braunohler's debut album "How Do I Land?" out August 20th

July 08, 2013

We're beyond excited to announce that we will be releasing Kurt Braunohler's debut album, How Do I Land? on August 20th.

Kurt was chosen as featured comic in Variety’s annual prestigious “10 Comics To Watch” list. He was also featured in Time Out New York's list of 50 Funniest New Yorkers, named as a "Comic to Watch" by Comedy Central, the New York Comedy Festival and TimeOut NY, as well as “Best Male Stand-Up” by the ECNY and “Best Unscripted Host” by the New York Television Festival.

In early 2013, venerable indie label Kill Rock Stars announced Kurt as the first comedy signing for the label. Kurt’s debut album How Do I Land?, recorded live at packed rock clubs in Seattle and Portland, is set for release late summer 2013. The album’s title comes from Kurt’s “Cloud Project” in which he raised $6k on Kickstarter and hired a pilot to write the words “How Do I Land?” across the LA sky. The resulting skywriting images went viral.

Kurt recently launched his amazing new podcast The K Ohle with Kurt Braunohler. The K Ohle podcast features some not-so-standard segments featuring Kurt and a great line up of guests including Paul F Tompkins, Matt Braunger, Jon Daly, Kumail Nanjiani, Steve Agee and Nick Thorburn (from Islands/Unicorns who also wrote the theme song.). New episodes are available every Tuesday on the Nerdist Network.

On TV, Kurt can been seen (or heard) on Bob's Burgers, Delocated, Chelsea Lately, John Oliver Stand Up, The Heart She Holler, Comedy Central Presents, Jon Benjamin Has a Van, Assy McGee, Human Giant and as host of IFC’s hit comedy game show Bunk!, He can also be heard on the radio on This American Life talking about his 13-year relationship Rumspringa.

Called "a prolific stand-up comedian" by the Los Angeles Times, Kurt has performed his whip-smart comedy on stages across the world as featured act and at festivals including Outside Lands, SXSW, All Tomorrow's Parties, Bonnaroo,Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and Chicago, and on IFC’sComedy Bang! Bang! Live. Oh, and he once performed at Radio City Music Hall.

Kurt co-created and co-hosted the continuously sold-out NYC variety show “Hot Tub” for 7 years with his comedy writing partner Kristen Schaal. The duo moved the show to LA and in Jan 2013 it relaunched with a sold out show at The Virgil. Hailed as “the hottest new comedy show” by Los Angeles Magazine, Kurt and Kristen continue to curate, host and peform Hot Tub to a packed house every Monday night.

"Kurt Braunohler is the Andrew WK of Comedy." – Time Out NY

“Do you like wunderkinds? Then you will LOVE KURT!” – BrooklynVegan

"Braunohler's brand of humour is insane, life-affirming, silly and above all hugely enjoyable." - Time Out London

QUASI to release double album MOLE CITY on October 1st

July 08, 2013

This one’s for all the misfits of the world. The square pegs, the don’t fit ins, the out of steps, the misunderstood, the heads in the clouds. And this also goes out to all the also rans out there, the could’ve beens, the would have beens, the left behind, the out of times, the lost in the crowd.” – “An Ice Cube in the Sun,” Quasi.

Mole City is not in the tradition or deviating from the tradition - it is the tradition. After 2 decades of launching drums, guitars and pianos through the shifting interzones between harmony and chaos (moonlighting along the way with the likes of Sleater-Kinney, Wild Flag, Elliott Smith, Built to Spill and a long list of others), Quasi are a genre of their own - they write songs in the style of Quasi, and Mole City is the Quasi Song Book: Parlor Sing-alongs for the Last Century.

Now in their 20th year as a band, and a two-piece once again, Sam Coomes and Janet Weis hand-deliver the double album/Liberation Cookbook/Encyclopedia of Kicking Ass, Mole City, to those of us who still care about well-built, homemade objects crafted with integrity, spirit, fire, and skill. In other words, those of us who don’t fit into a world where the empty noise of crass capitalism, slick branding, and high profile hot pants have drowned out nearly all other concerns. Mole City, their ninth album, is a set of anthems for the refuseniks, Molotov tossers, pacifist soldiers and bug-eyed freaks, and Quasi is the band playing as the Titanic of what was once Independent Music goes down.

Quasi would actually fit in just fine if every other band had such technical control and ability that they could express each passing thought and literally converse through their instruments, could write meaningful, memorable songs, could sing with heart and humanity, could maintain a musical relationship for nearly a quarter century, could disregard the consumer-tested research and American Idolatry, and was brave enough to strip back their production budget and advance to zero, ditch the engineers, producers and side players, and head underground into their basement alone to record and mix over an hour of new music from scratch.

And Mole Citywould sound like everything else out there if all the other records peeled off their absurd costume jewelry and piped pleather jumpsuits, climbed into the sweat-lodge, confessed their sins of avarice and pride, renounced all earthly possessions and ties, then kicked out the fucking jams. This is the music at an agnostic afterlife juke joint where lysergic teardrops are cried into sweating mugs of high octane hellfire, the bartender can see clear through to your every thought, fear and desire, the upright player’s head is locked into a guillotine, and the guys next to you are whispering conspiratorially about how to fix their time machine. Shakin’ blues, precision freak-outs, air-guitar-worthy riffs, heavy round droplets of time, fuzz everything, wah wahs, ya yas, ooh ahs, grunts, shuffle struts and chiming minor seventh chords - this is rock n roll.

Mole City is available to pre-order now as a gatefold double lp (first 100 copies come on clear vinyl!) or a cd from our mail-order department. We got all sorts of crazy pre-order bundles for this one including a Quasi 20th anniversary shirt screened by the band, a Quasi fanzine packed with photos and articles by the band plus friends including Carrie Brownstein, Corin Tucker, John Spencer, and more, the option to have Quasi record an original musical outgoing message for your phone, and so much more! Plus EVERY pre-order placed before October 1st comes with an EXCLUSIVE 4 song cd-r of Quasi covering some of their favorite songs by Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Queen, Marvin Gaye, and Black Sabbath! WHOA! Check it all out at http://www.killrockstars.com/molecity (Note: All Quasi Mole City pre-orders will ship to arrive the week of October 1st, 2013. Any items purchased with this pre-order will not ship until the week of October 1st, 2013 as well.)

If you prefer audio files we have a digital pre-order over at our Bandcamp page (the digital pre-order does not come with the songs from the mailorder only bonus cd-r.)
