•madigan, christine + tomas are in the Bay and sheri is in LA after weeks of shows around the country during the fall. madigan then played a handful of solo shows in the NW and NYC. the band is now working on new songs + recordings and tentatively planning shows around the west coast & CA throughout the winter, with more scattered touring in the spring: possibly with just the strings and madigan's big mouth (er...voice that is). we hope you're digging into the Bridge record and letting it melt some of the daily deep freeze off of you. madigan has been calling it her "watershed record" and with good reason. you can order Saddle the Bridge, ... From the Burnpile + various other BMad sounds + sights from the KRS catalog

•the BMad tune "snowfell summer" is featured as the end titles credit music to a new documentary called Chain Camera that is premiering at Sundance next month with a subsequent showing on HBO. it's the story of a dozen or so high school people in LA filming their own lives. madigan has been invited and plans to attend the Sundance premier. ..maybe you'll catch her singing + playing her cello on a desert street corner littered by art house theaters or flirting with Mormon locals.

•some of you may know that the song "glass vase cello case," which madigan penned while in Tattle Tale, was featured as the love theme to the movie But, I'm A Cheerleader, which was released this summer (& is out now on video). a lot of people have been writing wanting to know where to get a copy of this song. as far as we know it's only available on the one and only TT full length CD, Sew True. contact Leland at St. Francis (the label that put it out) to order: lemonk@earthlink.net or go to http://www.naildistribution.com

• madigan plans to start up the monthly MoonPuss New Music series again in 2001 (in either SF or LA). if you are in these towns or plan to be touring through (or have friends who might) and are a performance poet or artist, experimental dj, underground composer, songwriter or bandmember, or simply write any variety of innovative sounds that you would want to share --please send us your stuff! (to mp address below) we plan to release a compilation CD of the series in the near future. big shout out to Scarnella, Kit Clayton, Ian Callas & Co., Soundchaser, Erin Mckeown, Tarentel, Pinkyring, Polywog, Johnny Random, + Timeblind for making the 2000 New Music SF an irradiant experience. Thanks again for all your feedback + support.

We have a new member!
Christine Lehmann is an extraordinary violin player adding the treble end to Sheri & Madigan's bass clef beginnings. Christine is a recent California transplant from Massachusetts where she performed with the New England Conservatory of Music and toured Italy in 1997 with their Youth Symphony. She has had quite a lot of improvisational experience as well with various jazz, pop & rock stylists. She is an emotive performer with a dynamite ear and superb delivery for backing vocals -- enhancing Madigan's powerful, soulful croon. She made her BMad debut at Madigan's New Music series in SF this past June. She made her first touring appearance at their LA show July 21st at the Smell. Expect to hear more from Christine on BMad's national tour (Sept-Oct) and on future recordings: as your favorite punk-rock-chamber-pop group stretches and fleshes out.

*Stay tuned for the new track "Swarm." Madigan and Christine just finished laying down tracks at the Home Recording Studios in Berkeley, CA.*

New mp3 is up - listen to "Scraps" from KRS-357 Saddle the Bridge CD
Marci Blackman on the song:

"The first time I saw Madigan play, I thought: Oh Shit! How can she do all that with the cello and sing at the same time!? Then I saw Bonfire Madigan perform "Scraps." Just when I thought I'd seen the cello take on all forms possible, Madigan picks it up and starts playing it like a guitar. Solo and ballad-like through the first verse and chorus (accompanied by Madigan's heart-wrenching, intimate vocals), before strumming it in the bridge over a straight-ahead rhythmic groove. This recording of "Scraps" comes as close to capturing that live performance as any could."

"Po Man's Child tramples on taboo and ignores limits. Blackman shrinks from neither pain nor explicit connection, twisting both into something new and illuminating." —San Francisco Chronicle

"A stunning novel about family, history, memory, and coming of age… stark and honest enough to make me suck in my breath." — Feminist Bookstore News

"Blackman’s tale of a family’s bleak and twisted history strikingly illustrates the way even a wounded heart will expand to accommodate the many kinds of love (both nurturing and frightening) it craves." — Publisher’s Weekly

"The literary accomplishment demonstrated in this debut novel, indicates that Blackman could be the next Toni Morrison. Or Katherine Dunn. Or William Faulkner. Or, plainly put, Marci Blackman." — Albuquerque Weekly Alibi

"Po Man’s Child reads like A Raisin in the Sun on acid—or perhaps Thorazine." — OUT Magazine

"It’s a woman’s story about a girl, and the tragedy of the American family and along the way it demonstrates how totally new a novel can be in the hands of a true poet. Po Man’s Child is some kind of band new classic." — Eileen Myles

"Po Man’s Child perfectly captures the trapped-in-a-nightmare, slow-motion sensation of helplessly watching bad things happen to people you love." — Southern Voice

"Blackman is an unpretentious writer with a keen ear for dialogue and sharp insight into the human heart." — San Francisco Bay Guardian

"Po Man’s Child stands as one of the best debut novels I’ve read this year." — Boulder Weekly
