cinema interview (march 2002)

here is a story by Christopher Appelgren:

"I had the pleasure of living out one of my musical dreams when
during a visit to London I was unwittingly recruited into Comet Gain
as the drummer for a set of recording sessions around the corner from
David and Rachel's Croydon flat. We set up in a practice studio over
two weekends with Woody, who is Comet Gain's current drummer, helming
his own portable studio equipment. The process was perfectly Adult
Baby. David would show Kay and I a song with very broad guitar
sketches and we'd run through it. All the changes were cued by David
or intuition alone. Each of the two days we'd cut 12 or so songs. As
the beer river flowed through the studio, we'd dip our mugs into it.
This meant that there would be a chilled beginning and then as we
warmed up through the day the playing would get stronger and the
inspiration more pronounced. Of course subsequently at the end, it
was dangerous cacophony and collapses. David's idea as I understood
it was the create Krautrock pop but unlike other takes on that idea.
Comet Gain's pop is messy sweet tipsy intensity which inflicts itself
like a country twang on Krautrocks mechanical drones. Listening to
the results I feel like the results are pure Comet Gain and yet touch
the heart of it's inspirations truly and delicately. Towards the end
of each session my arms would ache and my head would too but I never
had any idea of when we'd be finished. I was forced to basically flee
the room both days when I realized that left to his devices David
wouldn't ever stop. I had a great time in Comet Gain, but only got to
play one show with the band in Olympia. The album from what I've
heard since, sounds great and I am surprised that David's sparsely
worded and played song ideas proved so sustaining and blossomed as
deliciously as they did. But of course I am not surprised too. The
work the band did on it after I flew home is what makes the music
special and my favorite song on the record is one I don't even play
on. But I feel privileged for having my dream of playing in one of my
favorite bands indulged. And getting the opportunity to play "Movies"
by the Lefties again, which Comet Gain recorded at this session and
is a sweet tribute to the two lonely Lefties, whom the world came
between. May they accidentally get letters from each other forever."
