<Bangs><Maggie and Sarah> |
| 12.13.99 becky asks: do you have any tips on how i can get rid of my cold thanks sniff sniff | |
Maggie: Hot toddys |
| 12.13.99 Lara asks: Dear Maggie, How old were you when Tobi first started playing with Bikini Kill? What was it like to have a sister in such an important band? | |
Maggie: I was 15, I think? 15 isn't really a good age for getting along with your siblings- I was a cheerleader at the time. |
| 12.13.99 jonathan asks: Bangs, so sorry to be missing you tomorrow at graceland. its because i have to go to church. Do you think its ethically wrong to go to church if i dont' believe in it? Should my parents be allowed to force me to go to church? What about that Jesus Cares about YOu sign between tacoma and seattle on the I5? Do you believe in religion? i think religion is overrated. it causes more problems than it solves. yeah and whats your opnion on christian punk bands? i don't see some jesus kid running around listening to the sex pistols how about you? | |
| Maggie: Use the time in church to daydream or organize your thoughts. Learning about the Bible is great for reading and understanding history and literature. I think it sucks that you have to do something you don't want to but the best thing to do is use that time wisely. Soon enough you'll be out of your parent's grasp. I actually had the opposite problem- when I was seven I asked my parents if I could go to church and they said no. They were afraid I'd be brainwashed. You gotta love 'em for that...I am not a fan of organized religion at all. | |
| 12.13.99 Anonymous asks: Dear Bangs, I met this guy at a concert who was in to making his own music on a 4 track. And lately I've been making my own stuff on a 16 track. We're in to the same music. The problem is he's 22 and I'm 15 (he thinks I'm 17). He wants to date and get together and work on some songs. But I just want it to be a musical relationship do to the fact I've never jamed with anyone and it's hard to find people that are in the same thing as I am. What should I do? | |
Sarah: I think you should definitely tell him your real age! then maybe he will lay off of the creepy dating thing. in my opinion, that is way too huge of an age difference. i never even kissed a boy untill i was almost 17! i think that's really awesome that you are making stuff on a 16 track, there must be someone at your school or something that would be into collaborating. |
| 12.13.99 Leo asks: Dear Sarah, I really love your band, so it is with some sadness that I have to ask an angry question, but I have to do it - what the hell have you got against Rod 'The God' Stewart? My Mum is a huge Rod fan and I was raised on beautiful songs such as 'Sailing' and 'Young Turks' (my Dad, on the other hand, was into Devo), so to see you thoughtlessly insult Rod makes me very hurt. Have you never heard the man's touching critique of homophobia 'The Killing of Georgie Boy'? And then there is 'Do you think I'm sexy' which Rod recently claimed was actually an ironic parody of sexism and not a load of outdated old tripe after all (player haters beware). And who else but Rod the Mod would release a record with a sleeve shaped like a whisky tumbler (classy touch) and get away with it? I implore you, please think twice before insulting Rod and his brethren again. However, I am aware that this is more of a rant then a question, so I shall ask a proper one - why don't you come to play in England? Most people over here don't even know who Cheap Trick ARE. We need the Bangs to help us rock! And bring Gene Defcon with you. Cheers mate! | |
Sarah: hey leo, i too love rod! but when i saw him play this year, his moves weren't so hot anymore. and his back-up band was comprised of stiff boring los angeles style studio musician guys. didn't you know that maggie and i both have rod stewart backpieces?! as for coming to england, that is a distinct possibility later this summer, its just a question of finances... but we will be touring the u.s. this spring with lovely brits comet gain! Maggie: Leo (that was going to be my name if I had been a boy), As president of the Olympia chapter of the Rod Stewart fan club I can assure you that Sarah meant no harm. She is a Rod fan of the highest caliber. She is merely disillusioned by the aging of her idol. I would never be in a band with someone who didn't love Mr. Stewart, where do you think I got my name? As for touring England- hopefully in the early fall. I will try to talk Mr. Defcon into it- we'll see. |
| 12.5.99 brontez asks: Dear bangs the year is 1978, the place is a jook joint in Alabama, the event is a "too much booty in the pants" contest, the three finilists are all three members of the bangs. the question: Who would win? | |
Sarah: is this a dance contest? if it was i think maggie would win cuz i have no rhythm and i've never seen kyle dance. but if it were a "too much pants in the booty" competition it would be a three way tie cuz our pants are huge. really big. really. Maggie: Are you asking who has the most 'back' in Bangs? Oh, I would win. |
| 12.5.99 Anonymous asks: Dear Bangs, What decided for you that music was the direction that you wanted to go in? | |
Sarah: music is not the only "direction" i have gone in, actually it is more of a detour from my original love, visual art. when i was a kid my parents really encouraged me to play music and do art and be weird so that probably helped a lot. |
| 12.5.99 Carson asks: Dear Bangs, I saw one question about 80's cartoons on here before and I was wondering if any of you ever watched Jem and the Holograms? When I was little I had a Jem doll and I loved to watch the show. I recently bought a Jem video. Me and my friends dressed up like Jem and the Holograms on Halloween. | |
Sarah: why is it that people love to ask us about jem and the holograms? it is seriously some sort of weird phenomenon we can not escape. maybe it is telling us to fufill our destiny: become a cartoon band. Maggie: I was never really into it although there may be Frenchie and the German Girls dolls |
| 11.27.99 emily asks: Dear sarah! ahhhh! skeptical of touring with the murder city! !@#$%^&*&^^%%! they are way cute, at least three of them are! which do you think is the cutest? i think dann. oh yes.yum. | |
Sarah: yes, they are a handsome band. i think everyone knows who my fave was, a lil drummer by the name of coadeci... |
| 11.21.99 fancy prancer asks: Dear Maggie and Sarah,I'm a very famous and legendary rock n'roll all-star who's looking to spice up my live show.what do the both of you think of my current stage moves? Also if I decide to throw caution to the wind and "back that thang up" how far back should I go? | |
Sarah: Dear Rod, i saw you play at the mercer arena this year, and let me tell you, your moves are baaaaad. not "bad" as in "good", but as in really really shitty. but, i did like how you went backstage every 2 or 3 songs to change into a different colored neon tank top with matching socks. but that girl you have playing violin on "maggie may" is also in the bad moves boat... my biggest tip for spicing up your live show: more soccer balls! |
| 11.18.99 scott asks: Dear Bangs people, what do you think of the draconian laws imposed upon people wishing to ask a band a question on the killrockstars website? | |
Maggie: I actually think they're a little too lenient, some of the questions have been a bit scandalous... |
| 11.18.99 Anonymous asks: Was there ever a time that making music got rough and you had doubts about whether to go on with it or stop? | |
Maggie: I've never wanted to stop playing altogether but I've wanted to not play with certain bands anymore. |
| 11.18.99 crapricorn photographer asks: Dear bangs, what's all this talk about scorpios around here? what about capricorns? | |
Maggie: Kyle's a capricorn but Me and Sarah we're Virgos!!! Sarah: actually our drummer, kyle, is a capricorn. he is the only one i know of around here though! |
| 11.14.99 mark asks: what was it like touring with the murder city devils? you are my two favourite bands! | |
Sarah: touring with the mcd's was awesome! i have to admit, i was skeptical at first because i didn't know any of them and just sort of passed them off as a "dude" band. but they are so fun, we had a great time and caused trouble up and down the east coast... a highlight was karaoke in louisville, KY. maggie: It was a lot of fun but man it's hard to figure out what you're going to eat or where you're going to stay when there's 11 or 12 of us. |
| 11.14.99 miss maddy asks: Dear bangs, why do you think so many emo/indie/rock boys are such egotistical snotrags? i have noticed it is increased if they have flood pants. | |
Sarah: i can't really say, i know lots of egotistical snotrags who walk around in many disguises... as for the "emo" type style, i really don't know very many of those boys. but the ones i have met seem allright to me... and you need those floodpants around here cuz the rain is ridiculous. |
| 11.14.99 viper asks: Dear Sarah, i need some advice i thought u might be able to help me. i know a girls who really is into music but i am not. but i love her just the same recently she has been having a rough time, i know it is depression but i dont know what to do or how to help. the problem is that she gives me the cold shoulder or miss interpets things that i say or do. if u have any advice please email me back. | |
Sarah: Dating someone who suffers from depression is not easy. my best advice would be to read some books about it so you have a better understanding of how she is feeling and what some of the causes are. open communication and support are super important in this situation... if things seem very serious you may want to suggest that she goes to talk to a counselor about how she is feeling, sometimes just letting off steam to an impartial person can make you feel a lot better. |
| 11.14.99 Sarah asks: dear maggie and sarah. the go-go's or the bangles? why? | |
Sarah: i'd have to go with the go-go's. i like the bangles too, but the albums just didn't compare with the hits, whereas with the go-go's all the songs on the records are classics to me. Maggie: I totally agree with Sarah on this one. When I was little all I wanted to be when I grew up was a Go-Go. I remember even being aware at seven of how unusual it was to have an all-girl band. I turned eight years old at a Go-Go's concert. |
| 11.09.99 Mindy asks: Do you like the tv shows, Sanford and Son, or the Jeffersons? Those are the best shows! rah rah rah! | |
Maggie: I love the Jeffersons- George Jefferson is totally Gary Payton- I haven't seen Sanford and Son for years but I loved it as a child. I'm a huge fan of Mary Tyler Moore |
| 11.09.99 Summer asks: Dear Maggie and Sarah, hello girls! if you could meet ANYONE from any time period who would it be and why? and was there any certain band that really just made you decide that you had to be in a band and play rock'n'roll? | |
Maggie: Anyone? That's really hard. There's so many... Maybe Dorothy Parker or Keith Moon. Sarah: hey summer, i would really like to have met my grandparents who died before i was born. as for the other question, i started going to a lot of shows downtown when i was 16 and couldn't believe what i was seeing! even if i wasn't exactly into the music the band was playing, i was just amazed by the fact that you could make a band and play in front of people and you didn't have to sound like the people on the radio and you could yell and scream and be bad or be great and it didn't matter... i had never been exposed to anything like that before. it gave me the confidence and inspiration to start playing guitar. |
| 11.09.99 Brandy asks: Dear Sarah, What I meant by it "not being new anymore" was that I have noticed more bands with women in them or all comprised of women. I didn't mean there was as many women in bands as men yet. As 9 out of 10 bands I see locally are all male(more like 9 3/4 out of 10). But maybe if it wasn't perceived as being such a new and different thing every time a female band happened to be good, more girls would get into it and not be as self-conscious about their music being judged on the terms of their gender. What do you think? | |
Sarah: dear brandy, unfortunately i think we are years away from having articles written on women musicians that do not use gender as a main focal point. its true, you would never read an article about the current hot boy band and hear the question "is it hard to be a boy in a band?" or "what do you think about other current male musicians?"... on the other hand, i do enjoy to read interviews of smart, interesting female artists who talk about issues of sexism, feminism, and gender roles. i think it depends a lot on the writer, whether she/he is actually interested in the musician's experience as a woman or just wants to draw boring comparisons and pre-conceived conclusions. for me, a big allure to learning how to play guitar was to challenge people's perceptions that girls have no interest in aggresive music or are somehow genetically pre-disposed to being poorly skilled (chrissie hynde said somewhere that girls are naturally not as good at guitar, which made me sad...). there will always be dumb articles written, hopefully the girls that really want to play because they love music would not be interested or sidetracked by what they had to say. |
| 11.09.99 Brownie McGhee asks: Dear Bangs If I could marry anyone alive or dead it would be Walter Matthau...Who is your absolute ideal? | |
Sarah: is this steve dore? i know you are in love with walter matthau and steve guttenberg. personally, i think i am a loner for life. |
| 11.06.99 Lauren asks: Dear Maggie and Sarah, What are your favorite movies ever? | |
Sarah: some of my favorite movies are: the black stallion, fast times at ridgemont high, the hustler, betty blue, darling, ed wood, the outsiders, and sunset boulevard. Maggie: Rushmore, Trust, Rock N Roll High School, Darling, The Innocents, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?, Valley Girl, Meatballs |
| 11.06.99 Anonymous asks: Dear Bangs, Do you think it's unfair in articles about bands with female participants, the writer makes a big point on gender?? I don't think it's really that new anymore.... | |
Sarah: i don't mind if its a discussion of women and music, but it does bother me when people use gender as a way of defining or categorizing the kind of music i play. it seems lazy on the writer's part, and also often draws false comparisons, like the only music ours can be compared to is that of other women. as for women playing music "not being that new anymore", i have been going to a ton of rock shows lately because my friend books a popular venue in seattle so i often get to go for free. of all the shows i have seen recently, i can only think of a couple bands that had women in them, stereo totale and dead moon. where are all the girls? |
| 11.06.99 dmfeelings asks: Dear Bangs, Did you know that the Bangles were originally called the Bangs? Long live the paisley underground! | |
| Sarah: Yep. | |
| 11.04.99 Kelly asks: What month is the new album coming out (if you know)...what do the names of some songs mean-"Lend Me Crumpets", "Ferocious Pocket","Baby's Day Out", and "Chocolate Cobwebs". | |
Sarah: The new record is coming out in May, i believe, if all goes according to plan. As for the song titles, my usual method for songwriting is title first, then the lyrics. so, a lot of the song titles are just words that sound interesting or pretty and then tend to evoke a cerain mood or emotion that the actual lyrics are centered around. But Maggie wrote "Baby's Day Out" and "Ferocious Pocket", so she'll have to explain her process. as for "Lend Me Crumpets"-- its top secret code for a certain rock star. Maggie: The record will be out in May of 2000 and a tour will follow. Our song titles sometimes mean nothing and sometimes only mean things to us. I randomly title my songs- my new one is called Night Potion and it doesn't even have words yet. |
| 11.04.99 Keara asks: Dear Bangs, Mick or Keith? | |
Maggie: I'm a Keith fan- both Richards and Moon. Sarah: while i enjoy keith's guitar and reckless rock n roll lifestyle, i'd have to say mick. he has an amazing prescence. |
| 11.04.99 brontez asks: Dear maggie of course you know i luvs you, so answer me this do you remember Gem and the Holograms, i do and i seem to be the only one. | |
| Maggie: Yes I do- I was too old for it though when it came out. | |
| 11.03.99 Anonymous asks: Dear Bangs, I heard that your new record is a rap/hiphop flavored album with Maggie as MC and sarah singing the hooks. And this is why you havent been playing the new songs at your shows. As you can imagine I am quite incredulous ...but is it true? Ps A Fred Durst appearance? Say it aint so. | |
| Sarah: our hip hop project was supposed to be top secret! who told you?! its true, our new album will be titled "she's the DJ, i'm the rapper" with a cover of neneh cherry's "buffalo stance". | |
| 11.03.99 vcb asks: Dear sarah from bangs, i really like your guitar style, who has influenced you? | |
| Sarah: that's a hard question cuz there are so many guitarists in totally different genres that have influenced me... in the beginning when i first started playing i really didn't know a lot about current rock and i wanted to play guitar cuz of old guitarists my dad listened to, you know chuck berry, link wray, etc... then as i got more into it, i started to listen to a lot of classic rock-- black sabbath, queen, led zeppelin, basically anything that was loud with driving guitars. now i just really like simple straight forward punk guitars-- joan jett, buzzcocks, the damned, stuff like that. | |
| 11.03.99 John from Yelm asks: Maggie and Sarah, Well first off if you want to see the hairy lez-mens we may open for Peter Parker and the Nevada Bachelors at Metropolis in Oly....Question 1: who did you two idolize when you were younger? you know like tried to act like and mimic? Question 2: Whats your favorite book? Question 3: Which of the carebears do you think was the coolest? | |
| Sarah: hey jon from yelm, yah i will go see the hairy lez-mens if you play in olympia... as for favorite book, i don't know how to pick just one... The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Anywhere But Here, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are a few. i'm afraid that i don't know much about the care bears so i can't really say which one was the best. as for idolizing someone, i really thought "Jo" from Facts of Life was the coolest girl ever, i wanted to be tough like her. | |
| 10.31.99 Danzig asks: when the world finally realizes that all the cool new boy bands are all really gay who do you think it will turn out to be dating who? I have my bet with rickie martin having gang banged all of the backstreet boys and then they went crying to N'sync and had a big orgy. how do you think it will play itself out? | |
| Maggie: Hey Glen, It was really nice to meet you at CMJ. I just want to know when you're coming out of the closet!?! | |
| 10.31.99 Sean asks: Dear Maggie, What is yr fave ramones song of all time? I know yr a big fan of the ramones..or so it seems. And what is your fave Member..or ex member in the ramones family | |
| Maggie: I could never just pick one- either of their songs or members of the band. I love everything about them. I was never really a fan of C Jay though. "I'm Affected" and "Questioningly" are my favs of the moment. | |
| 10.31.99 Sally asks: Dear Bangs, What made you decide to be in a band together? Is it hard to get along with each other after touring for awhile? | |
| Sarah: i was bored after the break-up of my first band, plastique, so i started to write some songs by myself. i was trying to think of a good drummer who wasn't in other bands and i remembered this guy jesse from high school that i would see sometimes at parties... so we started to play together, then we needed a bass player and my friend jessica suggested maggie, so i asked her and she said yes even though she hadn't played bass before. but i knew she had played drums and guitar so i figured she might be good at bass. as for getting along, yah sometimes being in a van is like being on a really long camping trip with your family and everyone gets annoyed. which is why we have a new drummer now! | |
| 10.31.99 Dan asks: Dear Sarah, Has anyone ever told you that on the seductive 7" you look like Emily from Beverly Hills 90210 (the gal who drugged Brandon at the rave in an attempt to bring them closer together and then when he dumped her cuz of it she doused herself and the float the gang was working on for some parade in gasoline and threatened to ignite the whole damn thing!) | |
| Sarah: no, no one has ever told me that, but thank you! what a compliment-- emily valentine was the total badass of beverly hills! | |
| 10.31.99 Samantha asks: Dear Maggie and Sarah, Where did you get the name Bangs? What does it mean? | |
| Sarah: we were having a hard time thinking of anything and my friend chad suggested it. it sounded good, although my idea of making it "da bangz" was shot down. i don't think it has as much to do with hairdos as it does with the literal interpretation of the word "bang". to be noisy, to be loud. | |
| 10.28.99 Susan asks: Dear Sarah, What's the best music to make out to? Have sex to? What makes the difference? | |
| Sarah: for making out, of course the tried and true method is putting on side two of Led Zepplin IV. as for getting down and dirty, well i really wouldn't know about that... | |
| 10.28.99 Jon asks: Hey Maggie and Sarah! I live near Olympia kind of (Yelm). question 1 : Would you like to see the punk band i'm in sometime? The Hairy Lez-mens? Question 2: Want to have lunch? Question 3: Do you like Pez? | |
| Sarah: hi jon, yah the hairy lez-mens should play a show in olympia sometime!unfortunately i don't get to yelm much so i'm not sure about lunch, and yes i do like pez! i am a sugar addict. | |
| 10.28.99 Jenny asks: Dear bangs girls, If you could be rainbow brite or strawberry shortcake, which one would you be and why? if neither, why not and what 80's cartoon character would you be? | |
| Sarah: i grew up in a artsy/noncomformist household where my brother and i were not allowed to play with commercial toys, i.e. strawberry shortcake, rainbow brite, my little pony, etc. As for cartoon character, i always wanted to be one of the Wondertwins so i could turn into a falcon or an ice cube whenever i wanted. | |
| 10.27.99 Renae asks: Dear Bangs, I really like your band and respect the music that you are doing. My band is considering moving to Olympia due to lack of places to play where I am from. Is getting gigs easier there? | |
| Sarah: this is my advice about moving to oly: if you have an idea that olympia is like a disneyland for punk rockers, then don't do it. if you are really into playing music and do it cuz you love to, then its a great place for that. rent is cheap, there are 5 all ages venues and a supportive community. but, the weather is crummy! | |
| 10.26.99 adrienne asks: how many yards of cloth do you wear in your clothing per year? | |
| Maggie: Is that meant to imply that our skirts are short? or wait- are you saying we're fat? | |
| 10.26.99 Alex asks: Maggie, Frenchie and the german girls? | |
| Maggie: We are like a fine wine- we need time to age. Everyone's always in such a rush these days we prefer to take our time... | |
| 10.25.99 Sean asks: Dear bangs, Beatles or beach boys? And whats yr fave album by one of them? | |
Maggie: Beatles- Revolver Sarah: i like both, but am not fanatical about either band. i like abbey road by the beatles and pet sounds by the beach boys. |
| 10.21.99 Anonymous asks: when is yr black metal ablum going to come out? | |
Maggie: We're actually leaning more towards hair/glam metal. Sarah: just as soon as we finish our rock opera... |
| 10.21.99 Erin asks: Dear Maggie, will anything ever become of the Geoducks? | |
| Maggie: I have just made contact with the other member of The Geoducks (my best friend from my childhood). Maybe we'll reform. | |
| 10.21.99 Kim asks: Maggie. do you bite your toenails? your fingernails? what do you think of people who do both? | |
| Maggie: I do not bite my nails. Biting toenails though is really gross. | |
| 10.21.99 roxanne roadhouse asks: Dear maggie, when's KRS gonna send me the promos for my zine? i sent in the zine a few weeks ago + my mailbox is getting lonely. | |
| Maggie: No promos until I get treats!!! | |
| 10.21.99 Anonymous asks: I'm a meatball? | |
| Maggie: who's a meatball? | |
| 10.20.99 Dee asks: Dear Bangs, After your shows, do you let fans come talk to you and get stuff signed? | |
| Sarah: yah, sure! i feel goofy signing stuff but i like talking to people... | |
| 10.20.99 Erin asks: Dear Ma'am's, Why weren't the Bangs featured on the KRS video compilation? The kids just wanna rock! | |
| Sarah: we were gonna make a video from the tiger beat record with lance bangs (how appropriate, huh?) but then we didn't have a drummer and now we're writing a new record. so, hopefully when the next record comes out we will make a bangs video. | |
| 10.20.99 Erin asks: Dear Sarah, will anything ever become of Motel No Tell? | |
| Sarah: hey erin, i think that motel no tell is dead and buried unless becca or jessica or tracy have something they want to put out. i originally played bass and we did some recording with justin trosper and joe preston, but then i got too busy and the lineup changed so it never came out. i have a tape somewhere... | |
| 10.18.99 Jose asks: Dear Bangs, What are some of your favorite bands? Is The Cure one of them? | |
Sarah: Bands i like: Cheap Trick, Dead Moon, the Gories, Black Sabbath, the Stooges, X-Ray Spex Maggie: fibonacci friends and Gene Defecon |
| 10.16.99 Gail asks: Dear Bangs, What guitar/bass do you use? Pedals? Amps? Do you write songs together or do you write separately then put it together? | |
| Sarah: i play a gibson sg thru a marshall JCM800 amp. i don't use any pedals except a stage tuner, i just use the distortion on the amp. but i highly reccommend the boss "metal zone"! it is a pedal that gets a large range of different distortions but often gets scoffed at cuz of its name. we are definitely writing songs now more as a group, we used to just seperately come up with parts and bring them to practice. | |
| 10.15.99 Gigi asks: Dear Maggie, Joey or Declan? | |
| Maggie: Well Gigi, that's a tough one. Joey was my first crush ever, but I think I'll probably have to say Declan- he's got such a way with words... Although there's that scene from Rock n Roll High School where Riff Randall is lying on her bed smoking a joint and she's fantasizing that the Ramones are serenading her with "I Want You Around" - Joey looks pretty incredible. | |
| 10.15.99 Brontez asks: Maggie, who holds the title of MAILORDER KING (choose yr. answer very carefully) | |
| Maggie: The crown has been handed down from Nathan to Brontez... | |
| 10.15.99 Anonymous asks: Dear Bangs, Are you gonna stick to the same sound that you had on your previous album? or are you gonna reinvent yourself? Maybe trading in the guitar for a violin? haha, sorry xo | |
Maggie: Sarah was actually a child prodigy on the violin- be careful what you wish for.... Sarah: hey, is this someone who knows my sordid past? i did play violin when i was a kid, but i'm sorry to say there will not be a string section on the next album. at least i don't think so, we're not done writing songs yet... |
| 10.14.99 Dave asks: Dear Bangs, I really love you guys, but many of my friends just don't get it. How should I convince them of the wonders of the Bangs? | |
| Sarah: the "wonders of bangs" can not be explained to these friends of yours. if they want the rock, we will give it to them. | |
| 10.14.99 Liz asks: Dear Maggie Please tell me your favourite treat to have for breakfast. | |
| Maggie: I really love fried egg sandwiches with fake sausage or egg mcmuffins w/o the canadian bacon when we're on tour . | |
| 10.14.99 Alex asks: Maggie, Since you seem to enjoy string cheese as much as anybody else I was wondering if you had an answer to a question that plagues me everytime I have a rod of string cheese, that is why does it taste so much better when pulled into the little strings as compared to just biting right into it? | |
| Maggie: I'm not sure why but, I agree, it is true. The best is when it's less like plastic and more stringy. | |
| 10.14.99 Anonymous asks: How do you feel about the Brewery being bought by Miller and then having Oly moved to Texas? Is their no justice in this world? | |
Maggie: Tragically, in all my years in Olympia (20 to be exact), I never went to the Brewery. Don't get me wrong, I've had a few Olys in my time. The stubbys are my favorite. But I always figured I'd go one day and now it's too late. Miller beer is so disgusting, why couldn't it be any other kind of beer? Obviously I need to eat as the more questions I answer the less sense they make..... Sarah: i think it is really sad that the olympia brewery was bought out. but i don't really know the details and how it affects the workers or anything so i can't really say if overall it is a good thing or a bad thing. but nostalgically, it sucks. the huge olympia beer sign on the side of the brewery that faces tumwater falls is gone and instead this new ugly miller one is there. its weird. |

| 10.14.99 Kira asks: Dear Maggie, what is your favorite record of all time and why? | |
| Maggie: That is so hard, um, of all time?? I don't think I could pick just one. Here are a few.. The Who Sell Out- The Who, Road to Ruin- Ramones, Get Happy- Elvis Costello, Exile on Main Street- Rolling Stones, Beauty and the Beat- the Go-Go's, Let it Be- the Replacements, etc etc, etc | |
| 10.13.99 the city of BOSTON asks: Dear Sarah, Billy Ruane is a good friend of mine and I'm highly offended by your comments regarding him. He may be a bit off, but how many friends of YOURS would buy you a car so you don't have to quit your job due to lack of transportation?? | |
Sarah: dear city of BOSTON, sorry to offend you. yes, i agree that billy is a very generous person, he made us a bunch of great mixed tapes and put on our first show there... but his energy sometimes crosses over into the scary zone, especially when mixed with tequila. sadly, no one has ever bought me a car so i could work-- but i worked so i could buy a car... Maggie: I know this is for Sarah - regardless- Billy was very sweet to us on our first tour: he paid for our hotel rooms, made us tapes, etc BUT he was extremely inappropriate in his attempts at kissing me on our second tour- I was really uncomfortable and he was insistent. He would not leave until I let me kiss me (after much debate I convinced him that my cheek was better than lips) AFTER barfing (see below question re: my feelings on vomit). It really upset me as he was truly out of his mind that night. I literally had to hide until Leslie from the MCD's thought it would be funny to tell him where I was. I got her back for that later on in the tour.. I know someone else (I'm not sure that she wants to be named) who had a similar experience with his aggression. I also know a lot of people that share your feelings about Billy. I believe he was drinking Tequlia that night. As Jesse Fox used to say: drink tequila=go to jail. Nevertheless, he wins for being most generous and most scary. |

| 10.12.99 Anonymous asks: who is the scarriest person you have ever seen/talked with in olympia? on tour? | |
| Sarah: whoah, this is a tough question... for some reason, olympia seems to have one of the highest ratios of mentally ill i've ever seen. so many scary people, how do i pick just one? i have to say it was these skinheads that my dumb friends went to go drink beer with in the train tunnel when i was 16. i went home. the next day i found out they (the skinheads) murdered an asian boy there by beating him to death with a parking meter shortly after my friends took off. the scariest person i have ever met on tour is billy ruane of boston! he barfed on himself at our show after doing "banana jumps" and downing pills. he kissed maggie and head-butted me (hard) on his way out after being eighty-sixed. | |
| 10.12.99 Cassie asks: Dear Bangs, Are their any plans to come to Iowa on your next tour? | |
| Sarah: i would love to play iowa as it is one of three states (on the mainland) that i have not been to. is there anywhere good to play there? we will be touring the u.s. in the spring and hopefully we will go there. but we will never go to florida. ever. just kidding. not really | |
| 10.12.99 Amanda asks: You're in a convenient store and your tummy is a rumblin'. What do you buy? And do you get a lottery ticket if they have a spiffy looking picture? | |
Sarah: i am going to make a prediction of what maggie would get: string cheese, bottled water, a small box of wheat thins, and altoids. for me its just wine coolers and laffy taffy... i would by a scratch ticket if it had a picture of rod stewart and pokemon singing a duet, and it was titled "Do ya think we're sexy?"! Maggie: On tour pit stops always include: string cheese, water, and chips. Before I stopped eating meat it ALWAYS included beef jerky. I have a recurring dream where I win the lotto and after that I always buy a ticket. Sadly, it never comes true. |
| 10.12.99 Anonymous asks: not really a question...more of a response. maggie...you should be a cat! | |
| Maggie: I was a cat for Halloween last year but I am told I am more like a kangaroo. | |
| 10.11.99 roxxanna asks: Maggie, do you have a tattoo on your upper arm? if so what is it? | |
| Maggie: It's the Ramones logo. | |
| 10.11.99 Mrs. Adam N. Yauch asks: Who do you think is hotter, Mike D (Beastie Boy) or Fred Durst (God DAMNED Limp Dick I mean Bizkit)? | |
| Maggie: Um, Fred Durst has got to be the most repulsive man on earth. I have to go with Mike D- he once bought me a David Bowie 'Young Americans" 8 trak. | |
| 10.11.99 Sarah asks: Dear Bangs Girls,I was just wondering if you are ever going to head back to Denver, Colorado? I missed you last year by just a couple days and I would really like to see you play...also, what are you girls going to be for Halloween? | |
Sarah: yes, i think we will be going back to denver in the spring when (tentatively) we will be going on a full u.s. tour... but is there any good place to play that isn't the 15th Street Tavern? we had some problems there last time. as for halloween (my favorite holiday), i think i am going to be zombie pokemon, which involves a lot of fake blood and a big puffy yellow suit. Maggie: We will tour in the spring again and will for sure come through Denver. Do you know anywhere good to play? i haven't decided what I will be for Halloween. Any suggestions? |
| 10.11.99 Otto asks: Snakes or throw up? | |
| Maggie: Snakes, I would have to say snakes. Nothing is worse than vomit. | |
| 10.11.99 Anonymous asks: Dear bangs, who cuts your hair? | |
Sarah: i get my hair done by sean "supercuts" kelly. Maggie: My hair is also done by Mr. Kelly- he is our stylist and choreographer |
| 10.11.99 Cathy asks: Dear BANGS, what do y'all have aganst texas? | |
Sarah: we have nothing against texas! except once we played a show in an alley behind a strip mall in el paso and it was kind of sad. the cops shut it down before we got to play, so we got in the van and drove all night to austin where otto and the gang were very nice to us. Maggie: I have nothing against Texas- once we finally put out another record we'll come back through. |
| 10.10.99 Krystle asks: Dear bangs, Don't you think it's time those greedy kids gave the rabbit some Trix? | |
| Maggie: Absolutely, that poor rabbit. Those kids are ageist freaks! | |
| 10.9.99 Nikki asks: Dear bangs gang, i was wondering what is your favourite Bangs song, for whatever reason, and why is it yr favourite song? | |
Sarah: i think my favorite bangs song is one we are writing right now and is yet to be named. i'm pretty sick of all our old songs although playing "burnout" can still be fun cuz its a little dramatic. there is no way i could name just one favorite song ever, songs i haven't gotten sick of yet are "southern girls"-- (cheap trick), "just like darts"-- (the real kids), "are you the one (that i've been waiting for)-- (nick cave and the bad seeds), and "sovereignty flight"-- (the gories). Maggie: Tender Thunderbolt is actually my favorite although we never play it. I agree with Sarah it's impossible to just give one song they are too many. Today it's Euro-Disco by the lovely Bis. |
| 10.9.99 Petunia ask: Dearest ladies, Mods or Rockers? Perhaps a little of both? A happy medium is always pleasant. | |
Sarah: i'd have to go with rockers. they sleep later and aren't as obsessed with hygeine. plus, i'm not a big fan of that whole helmet-head hair look... but i guess a combo, a "mocker", is the ideal-- striped shirts and white lipstick. Maggie: I think Sarah is more of a mod than she lets on- her hygiene is impeccable although I hold the record for showering everyday on our last tour. I prefer to be both even though the Who are my favorite all time band, although I suppose only two of them were mods and the other two were rockers.....Ah, a debate for the ages. |
| 10.8.99 brontez asks: Dear bangs, Who's more punk? Oscar the Grouch, or slim moon? | |
Sarah: duh, slim! Maggie: Have you ever seen them both in the same room? |
| 10.8.99 Kate asks: can you please tell me who your favourite fictional girl character from a book was when you were growing up???? | |
Sarah: i would have to say it was this character "Anastasia" from a series of books one of which i remember was called "Anastasia at your Service"-- she was a sassy nerd, i identified with her... Maggie: Ramona Quimby- My cat is named after her. Contrary to popular opinion she is not named after "oooo, Little Ramona". Please don't tell her I prefer dogs. Although I think she's beginning to suspect. I also really loved Turtle- the main character in the Westing Game. |
| 10.8.99 Otto asks: Snakes or worms? | |
| Maggie: Worms, I had pet worms when I was little. I kept them in a pot of dirt on the window sill and watered them every day. I would dig them up and play with them and even kiss them goodnight!! I was so attached to them I brought them on vacation one time but forgot to water them and they died. We put the dried up worms under our pillow for the maid to find. After that our parent's got us hermit crabs. I am terrified of snakes, yet I am compelled to watch them on Crocodile Hunter. | |
| 10.8.99 Anonymous asks: Dear Sara, jack daniels,ezra brooks,even williams,wild turkey? | |
| Sarah: dear "anonymous"-- actually on tour its Early Times (the name alone makes me wanna pass out) and at home its usually Ezra Brooks, if i was a richie it would be Maker's Mark... but after last weekend i am sticking to gatorade (i.e. karate kicks, "you're a liar!", and mystery bruises...) | |
| 10.8.99 Sean asks: Dear Bangs, Who would win in a fight between Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie? Be serious. | |
| Maggie: Sean, I would have to go with Michael. He's Bad! I think it would be hard to beat him up as you would just be in awe of what a complete freak he is. I mean, could you even imagine what he must look like in the 'flesh'? Plus I'm sure he'd have like 20 bodyguards- he'd never fight himself he couldn't touch anyone. You know, obsessive/compulsive germaphobe. So maybe Lionel would win by default. It's a tough match. You're not one of those stoners who watches that Celebrity Deathmatch show on MTV are you? | |
| 10.5.99 Joseph asks: Cats or Dogs? | |
Maggie: Duh, dogs! Sarah: i have two cats, but i'm actually more of a dog person. i just don't have enough time to devote to owning one. |
| 10.5.99 Sean asks: If I gave you a cape would you wear it? | |
Sarah: Of course, especially if it was a big black goth cape and you would wear one too, and we would have a picnic in the cemetary and listen to the Cure. Maggie: I would really love to wear a cape. |
